Pilakhuwa Wood Products

Dept of Handicrafts, Ministry of Textiles

Pilkhuwa is a small town in Uttar Pradesh, India, famous for its block-printed textiles. With the decrease in patronage of block-printed textiles,  the wood workers involved in making blocks were getting no work.

The artisans had to be rehabilitated by training them to design and make new products. Block makers were therefore, trained to make photo frames and mirror frames, which had a ready market in urban centres.

The intricate carving and brass inlay made these photoframes elegant and unique.
